ABSTRACT

Introduction: Species of Mesochorus are found worldwide and members of this genus are primarily hyperparasitoids of Ichneumonoidea and Tachinidae. Objectives: To describe species of Costa Rican Mesochorus reared from caterpillars and to a lesser extent Malaise-trapped. Methods: The species are diagnosed by COI mtDNA barcodes, morphological inspection, and host data. A suite of images and host data (plant, caterpillar, and primary parasitoid) are provided for each species. Results: A total of 158 new species of Mesochorus. Sharkey is the taxonomic authority for all. Conclusions: This demonstrates a practical application of DNA barcoding that can be applied to the masses of undescribed neotropical insect species in hyperdiverse groups.


Introducción: Las especies de Mesochorus se encuentran en todo el mundo y los miembros de este género son principalmente hiperparasitoides de las familias Ichneumonoidea y Tachinidae. Objetivos: Describir las especies de Mesochorus costarricenses obtenidas de orugas y en menor medida por trampas Malaise. Métodos: Las especies se diagnosticaron mediante el uso de código de barra molecular por COI del ADNmt, inspección morfológica y datos del huésped. Se proporciona un conjunto de imágenes y datos de los huéspedes (planta, oruga y parasitoide primario) para cada especie. Resultados: Se encontró un total de 158 nuevas especies de Mesochorus. Sharkey es la autoridad taxonómica para todas las especies. Conclusiones: Se demuestra una aplicación práctica del código de barras de ADN que se puede aplicar a grandes cantidades de especies de insectos neotropicales no descritas para grupos hiperdiversos.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT We recorded for the first time the presence of the two fruit flies pests, Anastrepha obliqua (Macquart) and Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae) and the parasitoid Doryctobracon areolatus (Szépligeti) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) in the oceanic archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, Pernambuco, Brazil. The specimens were collected in traps installed during June/2019 to February/2020. The fruit flies and the parasitoid species are widespread in the Brazilian mainland and have most likely been introduced accidentally in the archipelago.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT A new species of Diolcogaster (Ashmead, 1900) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is described and illustrated. Additionally, a key to all New World species formally published of the xanthaspis species-group (to which the new species belongs) is provided. The solitary larval parasitoid Diolcogaster flammeus sp. nov. was collected in Viçosa, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. This natural enemy was reared from caterpillars of Agaraea minuta (Schaus, 1892) (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) feeding on plants of spiked spiralflag ginger, Costus spicatus (Jacq.) Sw. and ginger spiral, Costus spiralis (Jacq.) Roscoe var. spiralis (Costaceae). The fauna of the xanthaspis group in the New World included just three published species prior to this publication. Diolcogaster flammeus sp. nov. is the only yellow-orange species of the xanthaspis group recorded in the New World thus far.

ABSTRACT

In Argentina, five galling species of the family Cecidosidae (Lepidoptera), including Cecidoses eremita Curtis and Eucecidoses minutanus Brèthes, have been cited. This note reports a preliminary study of their galls in "molles" (Schinus longifolius (Lindl.) Speg.) of Magdalena (Buenos Aires, Argentina). In April 2013, galls of C. eremita and E. minutanus were censused in randomly selected "molles". In April and December 2013, randomly selected galls were then collected and transported to our laboratory in hermetic bags, and conserved at -18 ºC until examination. Maximum diameter and wall thickness of collected galls were measured. About 84% of the observed "molles" (103/123) had galls of C. eremita and/or E. minutanus. The median of galls per tree was 12 (Q1=6; Q3=22). Eucecidoses minutanus had galls with smaller diameter (U11;53= 583; P<0.05) and thinner wall (U10;52=506.5; P<0..05) than C. eremita. In open galls, we found Pseudoescorpionida, Araneae (Segestriidae and Salticidae), and larvae of Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera. Within closed galls, we found adults of Torymidae and Chalcidoidea, and larvae of Ichneumonoidea.


En Argentina se registran cinco especies cecidógenas de la familia Cecidosidae (Lepidoptera), entre ellas Cecidoses eremita Curtis y Eucecidoses minutanus Brèthes. Se reporta un estudio preliminar de agallas de estas dos especies en "molles" (Schinus longifolius (Lindl.) Speg.) de Magdalena (Buenos Aires). En abril de 2013 se censaron las agallas de C. eremita y E. minutanus en molles seleccionados al azar. En abril y diciembre de 2013, se colectaron mediante muestreo aleatorio agallas de ambas especies, se trasladaron en bolsas herméticas y se conservaron a -18 ºC hasta ser examinadas. Se midieron el diámetro máximo y el grosor de la pared. Un 84% de los molles observados (103/123) presentaron agallas de C. eremita y/o E. minutanus. La mediana de agallas cerradas por árbol fue 12 (Q1=6 y Q3=22). Las agallas de E. minutanus presentaron un diámetro menor (U11;53= 583; P<0,05) y una pared más delgada (U10;52=506,5; P<0,05) que las de C. eremita. Los organismos asociados a las agallas abiertas fueron Pseudoescorpionida, Araneae (Segestriidae y Salticidae), y larvas de Lepidoptera y de Hymenoptera. Dentro de las agallas cerradas se encontraron adultos de Torymidae y de Chalcidoidea, y larvas de Ichneumonoidea.

Four species of the parasitoid wasp genus Anomalon Panzer are recorded for the first time in Peru - Anomalon cotoi Gauld & Bradshaw, 1997, Anomalon duniae Gauld & Bradshaw, 1997, Anomalon fuscipes (Cameron, 1886), and Anomalon sinuatum (Morley, 1912).


Se registra por primera vez para Perú a cuatro especies de Anomalon - Anomalon cotoi Gauld & Bradshaw, 1997, Anomalon duniae Gauld & Bradshaw, 1997, Anomalon fuscipes (Cameron, 1886) and Anomalon sinuatum (Morley, 1912).

ABSTRACT

The species of the strictly Neotropical ophionine wasp genus Alophophion Cushman, 1947 are revised. New descriptions of all previously named species are provided, except Alophophion holosericeus (Taschenberg, 1875) for which the type series is lost and the name is herein considered a nomen dubium. The female of A. flavorufus (Brullé, 1846) is described for the first time. Four informal species groups are proposed based on the morphology of the mandibles, development of the malar space, and general proportions of the head (i.e., development of the face and gena). Whereas the genus previously included only seven named species, it is here expanded to include 49 species (not including the aforementioned nomen dubium), 43 of which are newly discovered and described and thereby increasing the diversity by over eight times. A key to the four species groups and their included taxa is provided. Alophophion is confined to cold and/or dry areas of subequatorial South America, with the exception of A. mancocapaci new species and A. pedroi new species which occur incloud forests around Cuzco, Peru. The genus is newly recorded from Bolivia and Ecuador, and more extensive and accurate distributions are summarized for A. chilensis, A. flavorufus, and A. politus. Alophophion flavorufus is newly recorded from Argentina


Las especies del genero de avispas neotropicales Alophophion Cushman, 1947 son revisadas. Se presenta nuevas descripciones para todas la especies previamente descritas, excepto Alophophion holosericeus (Taschenberg, 1875) debido a que los especímenes tipo están perdidos y el nombre es considerado nomen dubium. La hembra de A. flavorufus (Brullé, 1846) es descrita por primera vez. Cuatro grupos de especies informales son propuestos basados en la morfología de las mandíbulas, amplitud del espacio malar, y las proporciones de la cabeza (tales como la amplitud del rostro y gena). El género previamente incluía siete especies, aquí se amplía a 49 especies (sin incluir el nomen dubium), 43 de las cuales son nuevas para la ciencia. Claves para los cuatro grupos de especies son propuestas. Alophophion está confinado a áreas frías y/o secas de América del Sur subecuatorial, con la excepción de las especies A. mancocapaci new species y A. pedroi new species que ocurren en los bosques húmedos de Cuzco, Perú. El género es registrado por primera vez para Bolivia y Ecuador; distribuciones más precisas para A. chilensis, A. flavorufus, y A. politus son proporcionadas; y, A. flavorufus es registrado por primera vez para Argentina

ABSTRACT

Braconidae is a highly diversified family of Hymenoptera and usually known by their role in biological control both in agricultural and natural ecosystems. Despite of that, little is known about its diversity in the Amazon region. The present work inventoried the braconid fauna of an Open Ombrophylous Forest with Palm Trees of the Parque Natural Municipal de Porto Velho, RO. Insects were collect from June/2008 to May/2009 using six Malaise traps in different parts of the reserve. A total of 377 wasps were captured, 17 subfamilies and 56 genera identified. Braconinae, Microgastrinae, Doryctinae and Rogadinae subfamilies were very abundant, and also the genera Aleiodes, Bracon, Capitonius, Compsobracon, Heterospilus, Hymenochaonia, Opius, Pedinotus, Rogas and Stantonia. The calculated Shannon diversity index was 2.15 and 3.3 for subfamily and genera, respectively, which were, generally, higher than the values found for other regions in Brazil. Generally, parasitoids were more abundant during the rainy season. The present work contributes with new genera records and faunistic data of Braconidae in Rondonia State, western Amazon.


Braconidae é uma família altamente diversificada dentro da ordem Hymenoptera, possuindo grande importância no controle biológico tanto em sistemas agrícolas como em sistemas naturais. Contudo, a diversidade do grupo ainda é pouco conhecida para a região amazônica. Neste sentido, o presente estudo vem contribuir para este conhecimento através do inventariamento da assembléia de braconídeos do Parque Natural Municipal de Porto Velho, Rondônia. As coletas foram realizadas pelo período de um ano, utilizando seis armadilhas Malaise em uma área de Floresta Ombrófila Aberta com palmeiras. Foram coletados 377 espécimes, identificados em 17 subfamílias e 56 gêneros. As subfamílias Braconinae, Microgastrinae, Doryctinae e Rogadinae foram consideradas muito abundantes, assim como os gêneros: Aleiodes, Bracon, Capitonius, Compsobracon, Heterospilus, Hymenochaonia, Opius, Pedinotus, Rogas e Stantonia. O índice de diversidade calculado para as subfamílias (H = 2,15) e gêneros (H = 3,3) coletados neste trabalho foi maior do que o encontrado em alguns trabalhos em outras regiões do Brasil. A abundância desses insetos durante a estação chuvosa foi significativamente maior do que na seca. Este trabalho contribui com novos dados faunísticos sobre Braconidae para o Estado de Rondônia.
